Role

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

To lead and direct teams of geotechnical engineers and technicians on a variety of projects, providing technical and Lead Engineer input, as required.

To act as Lead Engineer on projects (especially high risks projects)

To act as line manager to team members and develop and lead on personnel development and technical delivery within the Geotechnical (Civils) Group.

To assist Section Head (Geoscience) and Team Leader (Geotechnical & Geo-environmental) in work winning development and maximise both company and team opportunities with Clients.

Support the Professional Head (Geotechnical) and Professional Head (Geo-environmental) in training and technical initiatives as directed

Section Head of the Geotechnical (Civils) Group

Role and Responsibility as per the Section Head RACI.

Professionally manage a team in delivering high quality geotechnical products to both budget and programme.

Management of geotechnical resources.

Strong emphasis on business development role in rail and industrial sectors for the Geotechnical (Civils) Group and the wider business.

Supporting the Team Leader (Geotechnical & Geo-environmental) in achieving business objectives, including annual plan through delivery of Geotechnical (and Geoscience) projects.

Duties

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

  • Achieve the agreed targets regarding effective delivery of geotechnical projects to current standards, within agreed timescales and budgets and staff utilisation
  • Monitor Geotechnical (Civils) Section performance on projects and action corrective action when required
  • Monitor project performance against contracts/project quality plans and take necessary corrective action if required
  • Secure business by developing and maintaining contacts with clients with support from Team Leader (Geotechnical & Geo-environmental) and Section Head (Geoscience)
  • Assist in the development of staff to ensure the geotechnical skills are available within the geotechnical (civils) department to meet business objectives
  • Lead projects on behalf of clients as directed by Team Leader (Geotechnical & Geo-environmental)
  • Lead and manage deliverables within the Geotechnical (Civils) section in quality and direction through the RRP process (with support from Team Leader (Geotechnical & Geo-environmental) and Section Head (Geoscience).
  • Direction of geotechnical design section for project and detailed design requirements with support of the Professional Head (Geotechnical)
  • Take a Lead Engineer and CRE role on Projects as directed
  • Take a lead role in development of Client contact and work streams with Network Rail and Contractors (with support from Team Leader)
  • Develop and promote the team of geotechnical engineers through training initiatives and CPD with the ICE and as required by Professional Head (Geotechnical)

Section Leader of the Geotechnical (Civils) Group

  • Responsible for geotechnical (civils) section performance within the York office
  • Responsible for maintaining and reviewing geotechnical staff capabilities for the current and future work bank.
  • Responsible for lead on work winning within the geotechnical group with support for the senior managers
  • Supporting the Team Leader (Geotechnical & Geo-environmental) in achieving business objectives, including annual plan through delivery of geotechnical projects.
  • Responsible for all safety aspects of the Geotechnical (Civils) section including initiatives, briefings and action of investigations/issues. Apply procedures and systems to ensure the safety of staff, and others, affected by the operations of the client is maintained to a high level.

The role is necessary to support business direction and team structure expansion moving forward to support Team Leader and company objectives – see attached Team Structure

 

Experience

 

Charted civil engineer

Previous geotechnical engineering design and site experience at senior engineer level

Consultancy and contracting experience

Excellent knowledge and experience of the geotechnical aspects of civil engineering design and construction principles and standards

Good knowledge of geology and the importance of ground modelling

Good knowledge of ground investigation techniques and links to data acquisition and design

Excellent understanding of Eurocode and other standards

Railway and other sector experience

Health & Safety

Clear understanding of safety standards

Good understanding of safety standards and the safety implications of working practices

CRM

Ability to maintain client relationships

Ability to develop and maintain client relationships

Contracts

Knowledge of contract conditions and impact on projects

Understanding of implications of different contracts/commercial conditions

Communication skills

Good communication skills, both written and verbal

Excellent technical content and written English

Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy

Experienced at presenting to clients

Able to persuade clients (internal and external) round to best solutions

Good presentation skills

Team working

Demonstrate working/communicating across teams within the company to ensure delivery of projects

Work effectively within and across teams maintaining and developing relationships with internal clients

Experience of team management and development

Able to manage teams of engineers/technicians

Discuss technical issues with colleagues – use as CPD for team
